Moisturizing lotions are an essential part of a women’s beauty regime. Moisturizers are things that are often used on a daily basis. Moisturizers, as the name suggests, moistens the skin and prevent it from drying up. Moist skin remains soft and maintains a glow that only healthy skin can permeate. It is essential to choose the right moisturizer for the skin and face as not all materials suit the body.
It therefore becomes necessary to analyze the constituents of a moisturizer before choosing it for oneself. Here is a list of some basic moisturizing materials which help keep the skin moist.
Not all moisturizers are the same:
One can choose from a variety of moisturizers from the market depending upon the skin needs of a person. A major constituent called humectants, which is contained in glycerin and lactic acid, attract water and thus helps skin retain the necessary moisture in the body. Another constituent like the emollients soften and soothe the skin to a great extent.
These emollients are contained in fatty acids and ceramides. Occlutives are yet another major constituent in moisturizer creams which leave a film on the surface of the skin. This film prevents evaporation of the moisture from the body, hence retaining moisture.
Separate moisturizer for the face:
Among the several myths surrounding the moisturizing world, one common myth that goes round is that one needs separate moisturizers for separate body parts. This however is only partly true as all moisturizers work perfectly for all body partsm however one may need to invest a little money for some specialized moisturizer cream for the face.
Noted dermatologists believe that the face is more prone to acne than the body and is exposed to the sun more than the rest of the body is. This leads to greater water loss which may not be retained by moisturizers that effectively moisten the skin in the rest of the body.
Skin is always independent:
People tend to believe that the skin may get totally dependent on the moisturizer once exposed to it. This is far from the truth as the skin’s natural moisturizer is the oil that it secrets. This forms the reason for oily skin. Too oily a skin results in blocking of the pores which subsequently result in acne problems. This excess oil needs to be washed of and people with oily skin need not use external moisturizer in the first place.
But for people with dry skin, which does not produce the required quantity of oil for moisturizing the skin, several moisturizers are available in the market. Using these does not affect the natural oil production in the body.
Lip balm and moisturiser:
Lips are the most sensitive part of a human body and tend to lose water faster than even the face. The lips also need to retain far greater moisture level compared to the rest of the body to maintain the softness. Dry lips are prone to cuts and tearing of the delicate skin which can also lead to bleeding. Lip balms are the perfect bet for those who tend to suffer from dry lips. Lip balms are specialized moisturizers for the lips and helps maintain the water content in the lips by preventing evaporation in the heat. The constituents of the lip balm also moisten the lips for that extra moist look.
Moisturizing sunscreens:
Several moisturizers are available in the market that also boasts of providing protection from the sun rays and thereby working as effective sunscreens. One tends to believe that one does not need sunscreens when one is using a moisturizer.
However, experts believe that moisturizers that also work as sunscreens have an SPF content which is less than 30. This does not provide adequate protection against the UV rays that also cause cancer and other harmful rays from the sun.
Dr. Lupin, who is a noted dermatologist, advises one to instead use sunscreens that also work as moisturizers instead of moisturizers that also work as sunscreens.
The tips mentioned above will help one to choose the moisturizer depending on the needs of one’s body. Different bodies have different needs and what works for one need not necessarily work for all.
